The Transformational Impact of Art in K-12 Education

The arts are valuable and are an important component of any well-rounded education. The significance of arts education lies in its transformative power, offering students opportunities to experience their creativity and unlock their creative and academic potential. At Inner-City Arts, students are encouraged to take risks, learn new modes of self expression, build self-confidence and develop 21-century skills such as collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. The arts are not only important to the emotional development of students, they also have great effect on academic outcomes. Studies have shown that low-income students who are highly engaged in the arts are more likely to graduate high school and twice as likely to graduate college as their peers with no arts education. By providing and advocating for equitable access to arts education for our youth— especially those most underserved—we can continue to build a more creative, productive, inclusive and empowered society.

Smiland became president and CEO of Inner-City Arts in July 2013 after nearly three decades of service as a volunteer and board member for multiple youth service and educational nonprofit organizations. He began his career as CEO of the family-owned Smiland Paint Company, which he led for 25 years, growing it into an USD 88 million business with more than 400 employees. He served as vice chair of the board of the Los Angeles Metropolitan YMCA from 1996 to 2002, and was chair of the board of trustees of the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles from 1992 to 1998. In 2010, he co-founded Extera Public Schools, charter schools that serve elementary age children in his native neighborhood of Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles. Smiland has an in-depth understanding of how nonprofits thrive and a passion for education reform.
